Carlmont Instrumental Music students were asked, when you think of your journey with music and your instrument, what does it mean to play on? Here is what they said:
Thank you to Lilly He, our Play On logo Contest Winner. CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Nothing will stop us to play on our passion
Playing on means many things. It can mean messing up and keeping on going, playing on when times are rough, or it can mean working hard on something and finally making that note. Playing on is rooted in the program and the students of Carlmont Music are uniquely motivated to always keep going.
To play on means to never back down and keep moving forward as an orchestra no matter what the situation or challenges may be.
It means to persist through times where you feel demotivated about your skill.
Through rain, fire, hail, or snow, we shall play; we shall PLAY ON. Since I started playing, I have changed. I’ve changed my classes, my friends, my interests. But, since I started playing, I have not set it aside. I have not spent a year without playing, learning, improving. I have played on and I will continue to do so.
To play on, for me, is to keep on playing and practicing my music even when I’m frustrated.
When I think of my journey with music and my instrument, to play on means to continue working hard to improve although motivation isn’t always the most prevalent.
I think playing on means never giving up and working hard when playing music, no matter how hard it is.
To me, Play On means to continue to find joy in music, no matter the circumstances.
To play on means to not let what happens in the non-musical world to affect our progress in the musical one.
Playing on means to continue to express yourself through music despite what orchestra group you are with or despite what chair you are. Playing on means to continue to live a life on music.
Playing on means to continue playing through this pandemic despite the inconvenience and to give your best every class as if we were actually their in person.
To play on means to keep working hard and practicing arrangements for the ensemble even when we are low on motivation and stuck at home. To play on means to try our very hardest to be an asset to the orchestra, contributing our best efforts.
For me playing on means that you show up and practice no matter what, even on days when it feels difficult to sit down and play your instrument, you sit yourself down and practice, even if it is just for fifteen minutes. In other words, you play on.
It means to not give up on your instrument no matter if there’s a pandemic.
“Play On” symbolizes the hard work and dedication Carlmont musicians put in to continue to play and work on their music, technique, rhythm, and style no matter the obstacles that nature or mankind has put up in front of them. We will always hop over the boulders and continue trekking and playing on to the future.
: )
PLAY ON means to keep on improving and improving my skills as a musician.
In this context, it would mean to continue to work hard and produce quality music through the thick and thin.
The first interpretation that comes to me is the constant grind to improve your playing. This means practicing, playing with people, studying theory, and whatever else.
It means that your dedication to music isn’t obscured by potential hardships.
To PLAY ON is to try our best to preform for those watching.
I think that playing on is continuing to play no matter the circumstances.
To me, playing on means continuing to persist through the challenges of distance learning, as well as keeping true to yourself and why you decided to play music in the first place. I personally enjoy playing music because it brings me a sense of serenity in my day-to-day life, and as long as you remember the reason you decided to pick up your instrument, then nothing else matters.
To play on is to allow music to rise us up instead of letting our struggles push us down.
There’s so much craziness in the world around us and the past year was especially wild, but band has been a constant reminder that sometimes all you can do is “play on”! I’ll be doom-scrolling through headline after headline and then all of a sudden it’s time for band and everything pauses. You have to put away your phone, set aside the existential dread, and focus on the here and now. You have to go through the motions of getting out your instrument, turning on your camera, and getting ready to play. And pretty soon that stress and uncertainty melts away; instead you’re laughing hysterically at what a classmate wrote in the zoom chat or you’re in the zone trying to get a certain measure just right. Those 70 minutes of band are a reminder to slow down, to stay in the moment and enjoy what you’re doing- for us wind instruments, coming to class is a literal reminder to breathe! This year in the instrumental music program has really reminded me that we’re all in this together and sometimes the best any of us can do is to just keep playing!
persevere through frustrations and obstacles
To play on mean to keep enjoying the music that is given to me, no matter the situation that I am in. I keep enjoying the music that I am given, and I focus on making it good. Even if it is a simple part that I have to record, I enjoy it. Even if its a piece that I have been playing for the entire year, I enjoy it. I have continued to enjoy band this year and it has helped motivate me to keep playing.
I suppose that playing on would mean continuing to make music, even when faced with obstructive difficulties.
Play on is pure endurance. The endurance to have the physical strength to play my instrument everyday. The endurance to have the mental strength to keep on in zoom class despite the fatigue it gives. Play on describes endurance both the physical and mental side.
For me to play on means to never give up and continue to practice and get better even when times get rough you should still try to find time in your day to play just a small amount so that you can still grow as a musician.
Even though it is a lot less exciting to play alone in your room listening to a prerecorded track instead of being immersed in a classroom surrounded by fellow musicians, it is still crucial for us to practice and pay our best. It is all worth it to hear it in the end, when all of our recorded tracks are put together to form what seems like a live orchestra.
A group of people bringing joy even when things get rough
PLAY ON means that no matter what, you pour your heart into the music that you make
To PLAY ON means to have a commitment to playing your instrument. In order to play on we must overcome challenges, in order to overcome challenges we must have commitment. For example, in this pandemic we had to find a way to practice efficiently and have concerts without being together. However, the commitment we had to play on meant that we found a solution.
For me, what it means to “play on” is to persist with music despite the pandemic, despite all that has happened in this past year, and despite all of the academic pressure that we are constantly put under.
I think it means to persevere regardless of the circumstances. Maybe it’s hard to line up the tracks, maybe people’s mics are crappy, maybe zoom school’s got you down, but you keep going regardless.
To play on means to keep playing even if it seems as though it is not possible and stay in good spirits.
For me, play on means to continue to do your best to become the best musician you can be. There is always going to be things that you cannot control, and you just have to accept that and keep doing your best.
I think that “playing on” means to persevere despite the challenges people may face. In our case, we continue to practice and play our instruments despite what is happening in the world now.
When I think of my journey in music and what it means to play on, I say no matter what the circumstances we will continue to create music whether that’s for ourselves or for others
Play on means to work hard and audition for a spot even if you don’t think you will get it.
To play on means to play in the hardest situations like covid. Essentially, we are supposed to be playing everywhere even when it is hard as your imagination can be expressed everywhere with music.
What play on means to me is that even if we have gone through many obstacles, our instruments are still there for us. Even through this pandemic we are still with our instruments, playing on.
I think mostly about what Mr. Switzer talked about, how we are all on mars. You could do something where we are all on our own little planets. Mostly, playing on means not letting anything or anyone get in the way of making music together.
I started playing the Alto Saxophone at a young age and It was so much fun! Before I knew it I was in High school and had been learning my instrument for around 4.5 years and in these years I had made many musical mistakes, but I kept learning. To play on means to never give up if you make a mistake. It means to keep your resolve and stay striving for greatness.
At first playing my instrument was more of a chore but when I got better I started enjoying practicing and learning new songs.
When I think of my journey with music and my instrument, I think to play on means that even during a pandemic, we are still creating good music, practicing, and not giving up.
I believe “to play on” signifies the importance of music and our instruments to us musicians. Even though we play remotely we still put in the effort to create a piece together.
It means to play on the notes and to play on the strings – or the keys – or the pipes.
I think play on means to continue to play, no matter what difficulties or challenges we may encounter, because we are all united in the goal to perform and share music with others.

Playing on means staying dedicated to your instrument no matter how confusing or challenging the world is
For me it means to continue to put in the effort to improve on your instrument despite the challenges presented in all aspects of life.
To play on is to persevere through challenging moments that make you frustrated and want to give up. It’s when you use brute force to solve these problems when you have to(ex. repetition), and doing whatever else it takes to be better today than you were yesterday.
It means to continue to practice, play, and most importantly, have fun to the best of your ability, no matter the circumstances.
I think to play on means to keep putting in the effort to be in an instrumental group, even during the pandemic.
When thinking of my journey with music and my instrument, I think playing on means that you continue to try and learn. It could literally mean playing on, even with certain circumstances such as the pandemic. It could also mean continuing to develop and understand music and our instruments. To grow up with a better sense of musicality and following down the path of incorporating music/playing in our lives.
Playing on means that you continue to practice and perform, even if things go wrong.
To be motivated and practicing no matter what
To play on means to not give up and to stay strong even through the toughest times. It is to continuously fuel your passion for art and make sure that it isn’t lost. This is important to show that we can still bring joy and be together as a group that plays music!
Play on means to keep playing whether at home on zoom or at school
It means that we continue to develop on our journey as musicians regardless of the circumstances. We strive to do our best and make the most out of what we have.
To continue playing.
Playing on means that no matter what happens, music will always be there to help you push through the hardest of days and that no matter what, you can always pick up your instrument and play.
No matter what, continue to persevere and play on!
For me, “playing on” means that even if you only have time to practice for only 10-15 minutes, you would still practice for this 10-15 minutes. Those who “play on” don’t really see music as work; rather, they see is as having fun while improving their skills.
What it means to play on means to keep going. It means that through any and whatever circumstance that the music department may face, we will do our best to find ways around those circumstances in order to keep going.
Even though we are apart, we play together
It means to continue music throughout your life
Playing on means overcoming all obstacles that quarantine and life in general may entail, and continuing to master the art of music.
I think the line “play on” represents how all of the people in band right now have kept playing despite the circumstances and how we will do anything to keep playing.
To play music with obstacles in the way (obstacles as in challenge) and to overcome those obstacles.
To play on, it means to continue getting better at your instrument, to keep reaching new heights and to play your best for your band and classmates who surround you.
It means that even though I accidentally bit my lip 3 times in one week I still practice the stuff I need to practice. That was a rough few days.
Playing has been an escape throughout quarantine. When I’m playing no one bothers me or expects anything of me. Playing on throughout this time, although difficult with the lack of practice space and proper equipment, has been an amazing way for me to deal with the stresses of the pandemic.
Playing on describes two major concepts: devotion and perseverance. Devotion is what causes players to continue playing and enjoying their instrument. Perseverance is what causes players to continue participating in band, despite the troubles.
To play on means to play during any circumstances and to be able to understand the challenges and overcome them.
It means to continue playing/ playing while standing on something.
To play on means to endure through hardships, persevere through obstacles, and continue growing with my instrument.
Sticking with my instrument through both successes and failures, and not letting anything discourage me from continuing to play
Music has always been and will always be an integral part of our lives.
To me, playing on means to work and practice no matter what.
For me play on means that no matter how hard it becomes to keep up with an instrument, if you put in the effort you can continue to advance as a musician.
To me, playing on means the dedication and commitment I have already put into my music, and taking it a step further and incorporating it into my future. Even having a career that has nothing to do with music, you can still play.
To always have one more way to enhance my life and myself, and sometimes to make music for other people.
For me what it means to play on is in the midst of hard situations that seem like there’s no hope to continue working hard. I switched instruments and this new instrument was so new to me and it was really hard to get start playing this instrument and at one point I was about to quit but my parents and music teacher helped and supported me and I’ve come a long way from there. One time I was going to audition for all state but my grandma was very sick so we had to fly to India and I couldn’t bring my bassoon so I wasn’t able to practice for 1 month! I was very upset as this was important to me but my mom told me to not feel bad about what I couldn’t do but think about what I would do when I get back. So when I got back I practiced two times everyday in the summer and gave it my all and when the results came out I made it and I was extremely happy.
To play on means to continue playing your instrument and making musical masterpieces despite roadblocks or problems you face. To play on means not letting anything get in your way of playing your music.
To play on is to enjoy something, and decide to stay committed to it as you push through the background noise.
The slogan “Play On” can have many connotations. The surface-level meaning would be continuing to play my instrument from fourth grade to high school. Play On could also refer to continuing to play during the pandemic despite the difficulties with distance learning. For me, Play On refers to my continued passion for music despite the academic pressures of high school and also despite the difficulties regarding the pandemic. Finally, in my eyes, to “Play On” means to strengthen (or develop) a relationship with my instrument throughout the years, essentially becoming a more thoughtful musician.
To me, playing on means staying to be flexible, cooperative, and enthusiastic through periods of change and doubt.
To “PLAY ON” means to persist in recognizing how music keeps all of us connected in some way during these difficult times. Through music, we are able to rebuild our relationships that have weakened throughout the pandemic, which, as a result, further strengthens our attachment to music, as well as the urge to share it with our community.
Playing on means to try your best and to not give up no matter how difficult a song can be.
I think for me, ‘playing on’ means to push on with a passion for music, even when everything else in the world is falling apart. Often times, music is an outlet for us where we can be our raw selves and feel safe despite challenges that may be going on outside of the melodies and notes and rhythms.
There are times we can get stuck or feel uninspired to make music so to play on means to keep making music until you find that spark; don’t wait for the inspiration to find you.
To play on means to do your best and play during difficult circumstances. We have been playing our instruments on zoom and using recording software to improve and perform our music abilities. We strive to be the best everyday and to achieve greater goals.
I think that it shows that you can learn easier things better than you think you can.
“Playing On” is a constant pursuit of musical growth that does not falter, even in the face of inconvenience or adversity. It is driven by a passion for artistic expression in the form of music.
For me, it’s to continue with progressing in skill level with my instrument. Sure you can keep playing, but I think what they are getting at is the improvement made by continuing to play and focusing on all the different factors of a piece and an instrument that make it sound good.
To play on means that you don’t give up on music when things get tough.
For me, play on means through all of the struggles and challenges of distance learning, we should not let it stop us from playing.
Play on means no matter what situation your or where you at (school/home) you always have to play your instrument and get better so when you do go back to school you can get the tip and tricks you missed or get a lot of helpful advice.
Playing on means to persevere and play your instrument even when times are tough.
When we say to play on, for me it means to keep going and try your best on any piece no matter if it really hard or easy. Also it means that we should keep playing over the years, and to be apart of the band.
While times change, music persists. But only the musician can bring it to life. Therefore, it is our responsibility as the musicians to play on.
Playing on is recording over and over again, as many takes as it needs.
I think it means that people will still continue to practice their instruments even if anything bad around the world happens.
Playing on means not letting the virus hold us back
To keep playing no matter the obstacle or challenge.
Playing on means to continue on and do your best.
No matter the circumstances, how difficult a piece is, or how far apart we may be the band will continue to persevere and play on.
For me playing on means to keep persisting day in and day out. Most of the time, life is filled with challenges and you need to PLAY ON and get through it.
I know that a lot of people are struggling with mental health and school right now, so playing on might mean to use your instrument as a way to take a healthy break from academics and stressors, if even for only half an hour. It is a way to get yourself through the difficult times and focus on something that uses your brain in a different way. I think that people have also become more inspired to continue playing because they cannot do many of their previous hobbies, and so focus a lot more of their attention to their instrument. I know that for me I have become a lot more inspired to improve my technique and play solo pieces on my own time. Finally, I think play on represents how dedicated many people are to playing, because it is easy to lose interest in many things during this time. However, the music program still has many students who still want to improve and continue to develop their skills, which just shows how much perseverance a lot of people have and how they care a lot about what they do.
For me, playing on means to keep making music no matter what. Despite the fact that making and learning music has become very difficult, we must do our best to get the best out of the situation. Before COVID, I didn’t know anything about editing music. Now, I enjoy recording multiple parts of a song and putting them together. However, playing on also means helping out other, less experienced musicians make music so they can continue to learn and play until everything is back to normal. This is why I volunteered to mentor in the Music Mentoring program, so I can help out some younger cellists.
Keep playing no matter what happens in the world.
It means continuing to improve at playing your instrument even during a pandemic.
It means to keep the music in high school. Music is what makes school more than just a classroom with lectures, just like sports. It’s important that we maintain these extra-curricular.
Playing on means remaining dedicated to what you do and continuing to do it no matter what is going on in the world.
To “PLAY ON” means no matter how hard a piece is or how much time it takes to master, we as a band strive to keep playing until we can meet these standards.
“Play On” represents the joy in playing music. When one “plays on”, they get absorbed into their music and don’t worry about anything else going on.
To play on means the ability to again collaborate with our fellow classmates in order to achieve the best quality music with the worst quality situation. Since we are unable to be in person, it has been nearly impossible to work how we did before the pandemic hit. Nevertheless, we have decided to “play on” through the challenges that have been thrown our way.
To persevere.
To me playing on means to continue playing regardless of the adversities I face. Whether it be a difficult passage or a global pandemic. Playing on means to never give up on music for any reason.
When I started playing the clarinet in fourth grade, I never imagined that 1) I would end up playing the tuba and 2) music would become such a big part of my life. It has taken me to state ensembles, the most memorable camps, and even across the world, but more recently, to my bedroom and on my computer. At first I had trouble finding motivation to practice and improve, but slowly I started playing again, and the Carlmont music program helped to continue my love of music and ensemble playing, even at home. I still dream about the day that we can all play together as a band again, but Carlmont music has and will continue to play on no matter what.
It means to keep playing through your struggles and to stay motivated to get better.
It means to have fun with my friends while playing. Be it joking around on field trips or sharing funny stories in breakout zoom rooms, we have kept the same fun atmosphere that band class had in person and carried it over to zoom.
It mean that no matter what may stand in your way you keep doing what you love to do
play on means finding new ways to break through musical challenges, motivated by our love for music
Trying to tune to an A that goes in and out.
Music is an outlet. It is not just notes on paper. An outlet for creativity, and a way to let out any and all thoughts and emotions. Inspiration may come in waves, but determination is constant. “Play On” resonates with me because if I’m having a tough day, it’s like a reminder that I have an outlet. I have something in my life that I can put my heart and soul into and during the pandemic has been keeping me sane.
It means to play because you love to play, not because you have to play
Playing on means making sure the music survives despite external problems that come about. Persistently pushing and attempting to make good music in times of hardship conveys the resilience and inspiration of the community and the ability to come together and create something beautiful in a very ugly time.
“Do your best”
it means to keep playing no matter what
It means to play through whatever problems the world has, especially things that prevent us from going to school to play the pieces. It also means to keep playing throughout the year on pieces so we get better at them regardless of if we are at school or not.
Maybe…being one with the music and playing?
To play on is to persevere during challenges, and to keep doing what you love.
To keep making music even in the face of absurdity
Personally, I feel that a large part of playing an instrument is independent, so when everything hit, I could still keep my virtual private lessons and still practice, making music one of the few hobbies that I could still continue
I think playing on means putting in the same, or even more dedication into music during hard times.
Play On! means to indulge in our collective love for music and our instruments regardless of the obstacles we face.
To laugh at the mistakes and shrug at the impossibility of the situation and simply play
What it means to play on the violin is to practice diligently, with motivation and to be a part of the music that you play, be it as a soloist or in an orchestra. It also means to understand the music and to feel along while playing. My journey with music went from just reading notes and playing in a robotic manner to understanding each note and rhythm and playing with expression as if I was a part of the piece.
What it means to “play on” is to survive. No matter how hard, take it day by day but, continue your adventure because it will get better.
Play On to me means that throughout everything the band continues on playing.
Play on to me means to keep going and to never give up.
It means to continue to make an effort despite being stuck in the pandemic for so long
Playing an instrument is hard because you have to make time to do it to maintain your skills. So to me, playing on means to defy the circumstances to dedicate time to your passion for music.
To Play On is to continue to perfect your craft even after one might think it is “good enough.” The best musicians know that no matter the condition, a performance can always be improved. Especially in Covid times, having music is a separate world that a musician has complete control over, despite the world crumbing around them.
To keep playing and be the best we can be as a group
Playing on to me means to keep working hard no matter what to achieve your musical goals.
I think to play on really makes me feel accomplished and fulfilled with my day. If I don’t practice for a while I start thinking less of myself.
To play on is to enjoy playing your instrument and keep practicing no matter what is going on in your life.
The journey of music to me is one of working together and of especially in the time of recordings it is about key focus and patience.
to continue playing even if it’s been hard, even if you’ve encountered obstacles or people who hurt your confidence about your playing, and to continue even if you lack the motivation to practice.
I think a better slogan would be “Carlmont Music: Cover your ears!” Jokes aside, I think playing on is that no matter the situation, I am still playing my instrument and enjoying the creation of music. I am also motivated to play on by my improvement. At the start of this year, I was very inexperienced and my contrast from Day 1 of Carlmont to now is remarkable.
In my opinion, to play on means to persevere through all the hardships. Sometimes you have those moments when all you want to do is quit because you can’t play a certain passage or technique correctly; you become frustrated and lose sight of how music is so essential to you. Overcoming those obstacles in itself is “playing on” despite all the struggles. There are those joyous moments when you beam with pride and a smile on your face, whether you’re playing chamber music, solo, or in an orchestra and think to yourself, “Wow, I love what I do.” In this case, since we are all separated and must communicate virtually, we are pushing through and overcoming this obstacle and always find a way to make music together. In times of need, music will always bring people together.
I think to play on means that there are no obstacles that can stop our musical talent. If the pandemic couldn’t stop us then nothing can.
PLAY ON means that you continue playing your instrument no matter the situation. Through rain, shine, distance learning or Soundtrap’s clunky software, we continue playing our instruments and trying to improve and become better musicians.
This means to play even though we are in a pandemic. Finding ways around the pandemic to
still play our instruments and progress.
Playing on means that no matter the obstacles we go through, we continue to do what we love, creating music.
Play on to me means to never give up. We may not be able to fix mistakes in our past we can prepare for the future.
To play on means to keep playing your instrument, no matter what challenges you face.
Even in the weirdest of times or most inconvenient situations, playing on is attempting to still be involved with music; whether it is literally giving it your all and playing or learning by listening and using it to improve for later.
I feel like to play on means to try your hardest to play your best no matter the situation.
To keep playing in the worst circumstances.
Just have fun
Playing on means not giving up your instrument when challenges arise, whether they be in the music or in other parts of your life.
Play on means that the show much go on. Even if Soundtrap legit crashed at the start we are able to present good pieces to the parents. Even if practicing and doing class is a little different from what we are used to we go on. This is what I think play on means.
To me, it means pushing through difficult times when playing, whether it be getting braces off (for me) and needing to fix nearly everything about your playing or trying to learn a difficult part.
It means to keep practicing and enjoying music despite the various challenges that may be presented.
It means to persevere through any obstacle that I face as a musician.
In my opinion, “playing on” means persevering and striving for one’s personal growth in ways that do not disadvantage oneself or others. We have seen this through individuals dedicating more time to practicing their instruments and the school district making safe accommodations for students who would like to play in school and receive guidance from music teachers.
To play on, for me, means to continue to strive for the best possible playing every day. It also means that you grow a closer bond between you and your instrument, until you become one with the music. It sounds cheesy, but the more you play on and the better you know your instrument, the more breath-taking music you will produce.
To play on means to force yourself to get through life’s challenges and make the most of your situation. Even if it is difficult to get out of bed, your love of music and the joy that playing your instrument brings helps you get through everything else. Although we’ve had to have our classes over Zoom, we’ve stilled emotionally come together as a class and experienced the magic of making music. Let us play on.
To play on means to play on, nothing more, nothing less.
Playing on means to practice to have fun. It’s a lot more fun when you can play your part correctly and everyone else can as well.
It means continue to play music even when your in something like a pandemic.
I think to play on means that we never gave up on our instruments. Most of us started around 4 or 5 grade, and others even changed their instrument during 6th grade and still be able to play beautifully. This year may have been challenging on some of us, including me, but we were still able to play throughout the year successfully.
Playing on means pursuing harder and better things despite any circumstances in our way
We can’t hear each other, there’s no conductor, but we play every class nonetheless.
I believe that playing on means how we are dedicated to playing our instruments, and continue to play during a pandemic, along with being able to hold virtual concerts.
It has been so fun and educational to learn how to play music over a digital format. Music has always been an escape from the world and the continuation of it through the pandemic has been incredibly beneficial. When everything else stopped, music continued.
To play on means to continue to practice and improving despite uncertainty and new challenges. We’ve had many struggles with the new tech we’ve been using this school year, but in the end we’ve adapted and learned to work with it. Rehearsal is more difficult apart, and recording forces us to a higher standard. but we’re all the better for it.
idk I just do the class for fun.
For me, play on means to keep playing music for my own enjoyment. In the context of this pandemic and quarantine, “to play on” means to keep playing our instruments, despite the challenge of not being in an actual class. Sometimes not being in orchestra takes away from the whole experience of an orchestra class, so it can get boring online, but at least we do our best to produce some music.
Play on means to persevere through any obstacle that comes your way.
The show must go on! Even if it’s all distanced you can still feel that spark when you play your instrument along with a recording and nailing it, especially if it’s with your peers. To play on means that you still enjoy what you do, and know what that it matters to others too. Even with hardship you’re able to keep on going, and with the instruments we play, we can tell our stories, our style and swagger, and convey emotions that we hold too.
(TLDR) To play on means that we’re still going regardless of what is thrown at us, and it’s not only a stage for others to stop and stare for a while, (to me at least) it’s where we reveal the best of ourselves and the tales to be told.
To play on means to let music be a supporting foundation in difficult times.
I don’t think about my journey with music very often. I like playing music because it is fun and music usually sounds nice.
To me, it means improving myself, and feeling good about what I do
No matter how I’m feeling, if I continue to play music I will always feel better.
I think it means that even through struggles with mental and physical health, through a whole pandemic, we don’t want to stop playing and making music. We want to keep practicing and playing together because it’s who we are.
When playing an instrument play on means continuing to play, and that is what we did even during a Pandemic we played on. I think that I like so many others was able to find a new side to my instrument and because of that we were all able to become better at playing our instrument.
To play on means to keep practicing our instruments.
I think that “play on” means to continue playing music, even with the current circumstances. That means not dropping out of band, not getting deterred by the faults of SoundTrap, and playing in our rooms even if no one can hear.
To Play On means to continue practicing my instrument regardless of physical or worldwide obstacles that may prevent me from playing in my natural habitat of a band room in front of a physical teacher. To Play On means to do my best in hopes that others will do the same.
To play on means to continue even during difficult circumstances that remove one of the key components to playing music.
To fulfill the slogan “play on” requires a persistence from each and every student in orchestra. During the strangest of times, we as an orchestra are able to continue putting in effort to create music, and to most importantly play together.
What I think it means to play on is to try new things to make playing better
To play on’ has a special meaning in music. It represents the journey of struggle, growth, and experience you play on your instrument. My journey of music has been one of the most funnest and enjoyable experiences that have been exciting to partake in. It’s important to remember that it doesn’t matter where and when you start, it matters if you are determined to keep moving and growing.
I think that Play On means that a person would play and practice routinely even when they lose motivation, are over-scheduled, over-stressed, or when there’s something else going on in their life. No matter what life throws at the person, they would still practice and play their instrument. To play on is to basically to keep motivated no matter what life throws at you.
Playing on means to not let anything get in the way of spreading your musical talent
I enjoy playing music and it’s been great learning different techniques and new music.
Adapting and achieving. Working as one to create something amazing. Hard work and dedication.
I think that “play on” means continuing to persevere and keep playing no matter what the circumstances are. Trying to adapt to any condition, such as playing online, is “playing on”.
No matter the struggles you face, the bond you have with music will allow you to overcome them.
I think that playing on means listening to the people around you and cooperating. No one in the orchestra is going to be completely satisfied with every decision made, but it is important to remember that ultimately YOU need to cooperate with your classmates/teachers in order for the orchestra to “play on.”
In any situation, it could be really good or really bad, you still will pick up your instrument and play music.
I think it means to not quit and to do your best playing music.
To play on is to not stop, no matter what other people say
To mean to play on for me means that even though there are plenty of people better than me, even though it can be frustrating and difficult at times, to simply continue to play on with the knowledge of the joy music and playing the violin has given me, from when I was in second grade, to where I am now.
Playing On means that no matter the hardship, no matter the circumstances, no matter all the other difficulties going on in our lives, playing music is a constant; something that adds a level of normalcy in our volatile lives.
To play on means not to give up even through all the difficulties. Still practice and participate.
I think to play on, it means that through whatever circumstances we may face, we will always be able to make music with our instruments. Not only will we just play, but we grow from each experience and became better musicians with our dedication and resilience.
To play on means to never give up, to be determined, and to be committed.
For me, playing on means to be resilient and to persevere, even when it’s tough.
To keep playing even if everything is falling apart and nothing is going right.
To play on means you never quit even if things are harder than usual.
When one plays on, they play with a strong mind and heart. They pour in their passion into each note that they’ve practiced so hard to make perfect.
To play on is to continue working passionately even through hardships.
Playing on is trying to play your best when nobody is keeping you accountable and working hard on the music you have and your tuning and rhythm
I remember in elementary school, there was a time where I regretted learning the clarinet, especially since it was so hard to play at first. Nevertheless, I continued to practice as much as I could, and I started improving very quickly. So, I think to “play on” means to persevere, even when you feel like you aren’t good enough because if you play on, you will eventually become a better musician.
I think ‘play on’ for me has been to continue striving to improve and grow.
Playing on means to keep playing our instruments and improving, even when we are in distance learning and there is the temptation to stop practicing.
My journey with music and instrument has been quite the wild ride; although my motivation has fluctuated through these difficult times, I think overall, I have improved so much. Lastly, playing on means you care so dearly about music that you strive to improve, even through adversity.
Playing on means continuing to immerse yourself in music even when it isn’t the most fun thing in the world, so that it is more rewarding in the future when it becomes fun again.
To continue trying to improve your skills as a musician and learning more about music.
Play on means to keep persevering, and that no matter what, there will be a light at the end of the tunnel. My journey through music with my violin made me realize that I am bringing happiness to people, despite it only being a few, and even if I’m sad or I’m frustrated at the world, I can just pick up my violin and forget about it for a while.
Music is something we can all appreciate, and it’s nice to know that thanks to our musical education and our instructors we can continue to play together, no matter the circumstances.
Music has been a connector for people in good times and bad, and while the pandemic has changed the way in which we can play music together, the power of music is so strong that we must play on. While not being able to play together in person is not ideal, having the opportunity to explore new ways to record and create music has been a blessing in disguise, because it can be a way for us to connect from far distances in the future.
Playing on means to keep finding motivation even when you reach challenging times, especially like the pandemic.
Playing even when you get frustrated.
practice
It means to keep proving myself to myself by getting better and better.
Even when you don’t want to play, even when the whole world seems to be working against you, you play.
For me, “play on” means to remember the reason why I love music and continue playing for that reason. Learning and playing instruments can be very stressful, but remember that no reasons to continue come above playing on because you enjoy it.
For me, Play On means to enjoy what you got and don’t waste the time with it. To be happy that we have something and can make music on during hard times.
To play on means to put everything behind what you do. To play on means to fight back in the face of adversity. To play on means to continue your journey regardless of the new environment and new uncontrollable factors.
To play on means to continue thriving and persevering through difficult conditions. Music brings out joy in many people and to play on means to put aside the bad things that are going on and to bring out the good and joy in people.
To me play on right now means to keep playing despite of the Pandemic.
For me, to play on means to play despite the external and internal challenges I may face, whether it be a worldwide pandemic or performance anxiety, because I truly believe that music is an irrevocable passion.
Throughout my music journey, I have always been interested in playing percussion. However, I was never very skilled when I started off. When I tried to join the middle school band as a percussionist, I failed the audition to get in as one. However, I was still interested in playing as one. Giving up on music wasn’t going to help me do this. I ended up playing as a trumpeter throughout middle school. However, I played percussion for another music group named PYO, and I also found a tutor to help me develop my percussion skills. So when it came time to audition for a percussionist spot in the high school band, I was ready. I made the audition in the end. Later, I would audition for a spot in symphonic band as well, and I would make that audition too. However, near the end of freshman year, the pandemic happened, which caused the music department many hardships. Due to many barriers, and restrictions on group-related activity, the music experience would begin to diminish. However, my interest would not. Playing as a musician had been a really fun and enjoyable experience. I was able to make a lot of friends and memorable moments. If I had quit, all this would disappear and the development I had as a musician would be wasted. So of course, I chose to stay in the band, and continue to play music. That brings us to today. Developments in technology and safety measures have allowed for the music experience to continue once more. Despite the pandemic, the band is still able to keep an enjoyable experience. I’m still playing for the band, and I wish to continue my journey as a musician. So what does it mean to Play On? I think it means to continue to do what you want to do, even if a situation makes it seem impossible. Even if the situation tries to prevent you from doing something, keep looking for opportunities to continue what you want to do.
To Play On means to persevere and to improve, to gain familiarity and proficiency.
I think it means to be driven by your interest in music. Despite difficult circumstances, continuing to do something that interests you and you enjoy is always rewarding. Similarly, playing music in this new environment is different, but still very rewarding. I feel that my interest in music has grown despite the challenges of this year because of the way that we have had a wonderful music class during online learning. I have learned a lot this year and have really enjoyed playing all the different songs. Because of that, it did not feel like it is too much of a burden to “play on” because I am enjoying playing violin this year.
When I “Play On”, I throw away my Juul, delete TikTok from my phone, spit out the pound of Flaming Hot Cheetos permanently lodged in my mouth, and get to practicing! Hallelujah!
“play on” means that no matter what happens, we continue to do what we love: make music w our friends
Play on to me means to grow and learn on your instrument. To bond with the people in your band and to push yourself to do great things.
There’s a lot of struggle with music. You dedicate hours of your time to practicing and there are costs with owning an instrument. But we keep going with it because it’s a part of us, and always will be a part of us for as long as we live. And we take that part of ourselves and show it to the world.
I think its been fun, and playing is to have fun and happy with what you create with your instrument.
To me, playing on means to persevere through adversity and overcome any challenges you may face. Playing on is a larger metaphor for facing difficulties head-on and emerging from those difficult situations as a better person. In terms of distance learning, instrumentalists have been faced with a lot of adversity this school year, and in exemplary fashion, we have overcome these struggles and emerged as a more cohesive and resilient band.
Playing on means to continue to dive to explore and learn about music in the face of challenges.
I think playing on means to be dedicated to playing your instrument. It means that you are willing to take the time to practice and improve your playing skills. Dedication during your instrument playing journey would also mean that you enjoy playing your instrument and want to continue playing no matter what.
It is fun to learn new skills during the pandemic.
Persevere through challenges
To play on is to keep playing and spin what you love
To play on for me means to continue to dedicate time to my instrument through tough times.
The journey of music revolves around the relationship between the player and the instrument. In a sense, I have been playing on to the music as a symbol to express myself. Music helps me grow and keep growing. Instrumental music leads to me to areas, in many different genres, further away that words cannot express. Instrumental music can ignite imagery in the people who play it and also the ones who hear it, while words often mean one specific meaning. Therefore, if music brings everyone together in the tough times or in the normal times, we should be together to make music and PLAY ON.
Playing on means to continue playing music with the same passion and dedication no matter the circumstances.
For me, to play on with music and my instrument means that I try to adapt to the circumstances and see the good that can come from the change not just the bad. This year this happened for me when we worked more in sectionals and when we did recordings for pieces.
To play on means to be relentless in your efforts and to continue making music for all to enjoy and connect with, despite the constant turmoil in the world.
Play on means to keep practicing, trying to improve every day, and being the best musician that you can be. It means that you are dedicated and refuse to give up no matter how difficult things get. It’s the will to work as hard as you can to be the best player you can be.
Playing on means that you continue working hard, despite the things making it difficult.
To play your instrument means to expose your soul to the world. Or else you’re just blowing on a piece of metal to make noises that are organized in a certain fashion.
To play on means to not give up music even in difficult times and find solutions around obstacles.
No matter what, these kids PLAY ON
To keep doing what you’re passionate about whatever situation you’re in, because that’s all you can do.
To play on means to continue through the rough patches, if there is a difficult section in a piece it means diligently practicing with a metronome and building up speed. It also means that during hard times (like say a pandemic), use music as an outlet and a way to de-stress and relax, keep playing even if virtual makes it hard.
Playing on means to strive to improve and learn even when obstacles start to appear.
To play on means to continue making music through the years despite the discouragements and distractions that come up, and to treat obstacles, failure, and inadequacy as motivation rather than demotivation.
For me, to “play on” means to continue to make a sincere effort to work collaboratively and with spirit, even when circumstances make it harder.
To PLAY ON means to overcome the challenges created by, say, a pandemic and still create and play music despite all that.
For me, to “play on” is to try your best to keep going and grow your musical abilities, even if that growth isn’t linear or it feels uncomfortable in this strange online orchestra setting. We take small steps, we stop and breathe, and we continue. That means supporting each other, helping each other learn, and never forgetting that before all the recording setups, audio editing, microphone testing, and all of those things that feel unnatural to us, we’re still creating music. And that’s the reason any of us picked up an instrument in the first place!
Playing without an orchestra made me practice more and work on my rhythm.
